PRESENTATION SYNOPSIS:

January is the coldest month of the year ... so let's start thinking about spring and summer!! Shining Stars Gardening Program for 2007 takes you through the entire process of planning and implementing a garden at your center. Everything from raising indoor seedlings to harvesting, cooking and selling the bounty will be presented. Children learn to cook with vegetables and how to prepare and sell some of their vegetables and flowers at their very own Vegetable Stand. The focus is on extending learning through nature by participation in the garden projects. Our presenters will talk about how to engage infants and toddlers on outdoor walks and learn about plants and animals found on walks.  This project is also perfect for outdoor activities with older children. Some great ideas for your summer school age programs. It's never too early to start planning!

CONFERENCE KEYNOTES

Helen Blank, as Director of Leadership and Public Policy at the National Women’s Law Center, leads the Center’s work on early education, as well as its leadership activities including PLAN, the Progressive Leadership and Advocacy Network, a program for emerging leaders on low-income women’s issues. Previously Ms. Blank served 24 years as the director of the Child Care and Development Division at the Children's Defense Fund. While at the Children's Defense Fund Ms. Blank spearheaded a variety of efforts for improved early learning legislation. Ms. Blank’s presentation on “Putting Childcare Higher on the National Agenda” will challenge us to take action. She will inform us on what is being done currently to make early childhood education a priority and outline new research and data. Her presentation will be invaluable as we move ahead with 4k collaborations, funding issues and the challenges we face each day operating our programs.

Larry Hackett
was named managing editor of PEOPLE on January 4, 2006, overseeing all editorial operations for the weekly magazine. He previously served as the magazine’s deputy managing editor. With nearly 42 million readers, PEOPLE is widely regarded as the world’s most popular and successful magazine. Hackett leads the editorial team based in New York City, as well as a network of reporters across the globe. As deputy managing editor he strengthened the magazine’s celebrity and hard news reporting, helped develop the first editions of PEOPLE’s Hollywood Daily, and served as the magazine’s primary spokesperson. Hackett played an integral role in growing the weekly’s circulation vitality and retail momentum. Under his leadership, in 2006 PEOPLE’s newsstand sales soared and readership hit an all time high at 41.5 million. His keynote, “The Media and Missing Children” will help us to better understand the complexities and importance of immediate response time when a child goes missing. Through all of his experiences in the reporting arena Larry Hackett has become an expert in the role that the media plays during this time . Come and learn how our profession plays an important role as well. You may even get the inside scoop on what is happening with one of your favorite stars.

Renee Zaman has presented extensively on the local and state levels. She has taught classes, led all-day trainings, done in-service trainings, workshops and conference presentations and keynotes. Renee has 22 years of experience in this field as an early education teacher, adult education teacher, program administrator and state board member. She brings humor and excitement to her presentations that will keep you wanting more. Her keynote presentation on Saturday, “What your clothes say about you: How to dress for success not distress” will focus on what your clothes say about you as a professional. Have you had days when you wore clothes to work that you would wear for relaxing at home or perhaps as pajamas? Have you seen more of your co-workers bodies than you want to? We will take a look at what not to wear and how to use your head to make better choices. Ideas will be presented that are fun, comfortable and affordable. We will showcase three make-overs that are easy and inexpensive. Sign up when you register to be placed in the drawing.
