Some Tips on Working with Grown-ups

 

1.      Try speaking directly to the person you are having a problem with

2.      Be sure that you understand and rules, polices, laws, job descriptions, work rules, etc. that may be written to help in this situation

3.      When you speak to the person be sure you have at least one possible solution to offer to them

4.      Follow through to be sure your situation is adequately taken care of

 

Ways to talk to the person:

1.      Find an appropriate place to meet and talk

2.      Make sure you have enough time to talk

3.      Try using

  1. Sandwich: a positive, negative, positive
  2. Positive, negative
  3. Practice what you will say to help keep your emotions in check

4.      Keep documentation of your conference and have both parties sign it

5.      Remember there is a grievance procedure so if you feel your voice was not heard you do have a next step to take

6.      Follow the steps of the grievance procedure.  Talk to the person, then your boss, then the board or your owner, then licensing or fair employment people or union.

1.      Licensing rules

2.      Policies, developed by the Board of Directors or Owner/s

3.      Job descriptions

4.      Evaluations

5.      Signed contracts, documents

 

Remember to DOCUMENT THE EVENTS

 

Things that make a relationship stronger

1.      Monthly meetings with the administrator

2.      Monthly meetings with whomever to check in, discuss situations, set goals and check on progress

3.      Open, honest communication

4.      The ability to listen as well as speak

5.      Practice saying the tough things in advance, write them down

6.      It is okay to cry

7.      You have the power and the right to stick up for you

8.      If you say nothing, nothing will happen

9.      Avoid gossip

10.  Keep confidential things confidential

11.  Knowledge is power, get as strong and knowledgeable as you can

12.  Remember that systems fail not people
