Doggett, Ph D., Executive Director of Pre-K Now
Ever wonder if your
governor is doing all that can and should be done to prepare Wisconsin's
young children to succeed in school and beyond?
We do, and that's why each year we examine and report on the
pre-kindergarten proposals made by all 50 governors and the mayor of
Washington, D.C. Today, we are releasing the newest edition of that report,
Leadership Matters: Governors' Pre-K Proposals Fiscal Year 2007.
To get a free copy of Leadership Matters go to
http://www.preknow.org/index.cfm?WT.mc_ID=emailLM07.
I am delighted to tell you that the national picture is one of progress: 23
governors and the mayor of D.C. proposed an increase in pre-k funding for
the coming year. That is 13 more than just two years ago, and last year 19
of the 20 governors who requested more pre-k spending from state legislators
got it.
While I wish it were all good news, it's not. Children in ten states still
live in the pre-k wilderness, with no opportunity to attend a state pre-k
program. On their current governors' watch, more than 350,000 four year olds
have lost the chance to learn how to learn and get ready for school with
high-quality pre-k.
Read the report to see where your governor is leading Wisconsin on pre-k.
Please forward this message to friends across the nation. Let them know
that, if they aren't already aware of their governors' pre-k leadership,
they should be.
Thank you,
Libby Doggett, Ph.D.
Executive Director
P.S. This fall, we'll again report to you on how state legislatures
responded to governors' pre-k proposals, or made up for their lack of
leadership. In the meantime, watch your inbox for opportunities to spur and
support action that will help reach our goal of high-quality pre-k for all. |
